Question:
Are probationers entitled to paid medical leave?
Answer:
Probationers who are within the scope of the Employment Act (EA) are entitled to paid medical leave from their first day of service. Their probationary status is irrelevant to their rights under the EA. For employees who are outside the scope of the EA, their right to paid medical leave depends upon their contractual terms as stated in their letter of appointment or company handbook (if there is one).
For employees within the scope of the EA, the employer has to pay his employee's medical bills providing they use the service of a panel doctor (if the employer has appointed one or more panel doctors). For employees outside the EA, payment of medical bills again depends upon the terms agreed in the letter of appointment.
