Answer
Question
Can an employee consent to waiving the 30 minute break period after 5 hours of work in return for shorter working hours?
Answer
Employees do NOT have the right to opt out of any rights provided for in the law, i.e. even if they give written consent, it would still be an offence by the employer if he disallowed employees a 30 minutes break after 5 hours of work.
If an employer chooses to allow employees shorter working hours during fasting month or any other time, the law permits more generous benefits to be given to employees. The purpose of the 30 minutes break is to ensure employees are rested and hence less likely to have accidents or make mistakes.
