Implementation Of Minimum Wage Order & Minimum Retirement Age

The Minimum Wage Order 2012 came into operation with effect from 1 January 2013. Certain sectors were given deferment in the implementation dates. One of the difficulties faced by employers is in restructuring existing wages including allowances to conform to the minimum basic of RM900. Issues relating to the implementation of Minimum wages and the cascading effect on the wages of employees who are currently above RM900 will be dealt with.

The Minimum Retirement Age Act 2012 came into effect from 1 July 2013. The programme will deal with issues relating to implementation, premature retirement, renewal of fixed term contract. The programme will also address problems faced by employers who do not currently have a retirement age in the contract of employment.

M. Vivekanandan is an Adviser Special Function with Malaysian Employers Federation. He has extensive experience representing employers in Industrial and Labour Court for the past 20 years. Prior to his attachment to the Malaysian Employers Federation, he had served the Department of Labour, the Department of Industrial Relations (H.Q) holding various positions. He was involved in the enforcement of the various Minimum Wage Orders under the Wages Council Act during his tenure with the Department of Labour.
