The Prime Minister said the participation of these companies in the programme would be made a prerequisite that would determine their eligibility for government contracts in the future.
“I want private companies, especially public-listed companies, to participate in the SL1M programme. I will instruct the Treasury to make this a precondition for them to secure large government contracts.
“So, if they do not participate, their opportunity to secure government contracts will also be slim,” he said at a press conference after opening the SL1M Central Zone Open Interview Programme 2017 and launching the SL1M book and system here today.
Najib said the participation of the public-listed companies was aimed to providing more training opportunities for graduates that were now mostly offered by government-linked companies.
The Prime Minister said the move was also one of the methods for these companies to contribute back to society after getting government contracts.
He said that though some of these companies carried out social responsibility programmes, he wanted more specific involvement through the SL1M programme.
Najib said the SL1M programme introduced in 2011 was significant and had a great impact on job-seeking graduates to enhance their employability.
He said the programme not only exposed the graduates to workplace experience and knowledge but also enhanced their skills and self-confidence as well as helped to build relationships with officers at a higher level.
Since its launch in 2011 up to last year, 99,000 graduates who participated in the programme secured jobs, he said.
“This SL1M programme illustrates that we are deeply concerned about the young people who need a little help and training opportunities so that they get the future they aspire for,” said Najib.
The SL1M central zone open interview programme today and tomorrow offers more than 25,000 vacancies and training opportunities from 100 companies.
The programme, being held at the Putra World Trade Centre here, is expected to attract over 40,000 visitors who can apply for employment and training and be interviewed directly by the companies. — Bernama
