Fresh Grads Have Poor Command Of English: Survey

PETALING JAYA: The high unemployment rate among fresh graduates can be attributed to their poor command of English and unrealistic salary demands.

Based on a recent survey conducted by JobStreet.com, 68% of employers said fresh graduates demanded high salaries and benefits while 64% cited poor command of English.

In a statement released yesterday, JobStreet.com said, in a previous survey, 60% of fresh graduates expected a salary of RM3,500 for their first job, while an astounding 30% wanted to be paid as high as RM6,500.

The average salary offered to fresh graduates, however, is only between RM2,100 to RM2,500.The survey also revealed that 60% of employers felt that fresh graduates were being too picky about their jobs or companies, while poor communication skills were also a factor.

“Fresh graduates should do some research on sites such as JobStreet.com to better understand the expectations, requirements and salary levels offered by employers to prepare themselves for their interviews,” its country manager Chook Yuh Yng said.

The survey also revealed that 24% of respondents believed that the standard of fresh graduates were bad, 70% said they were just average and only 6% voted them as good.

The poor rating, however, was not linked to academic qualifications, but rather what employers deemed as their “poor attitude” and communication skills during interviews or at work.
