7 tips when job-hunting in Covid-19 times

By You Jing Ng for FMT

The economy has taken a severe beating from the Covid-19 pandemic. Many businesses have suffered huge losses after being shuttered, and thousands have been left unemployed as a direct result of it.

If you have suddenly found yourself unemployed and unprepared to face the near future, this is not the end of the line.

Here are several tips to help you adjust to the current situation and get your career back on track during these uncertain times.

1. Set up a schedule for your job search

Define a clear set of goals from how you position your resume and online presence to how you prioritise your networking contacts.

Set a time on your calendar daily to fully dedicate to job hunting. While job-hunting can be a long journey, staying motivated will keep you on track from start to finish.

Set minor goals such as updating your resume and networking profile as well as other networking activities to ensure you do not feel discouraged or overwhelmed by the effort of searching for a job.

2. Strengthen your network connections

Networking is not always about asking someone for a job. It can be about asking your connections for information that can help you in your job search, to establish new connections or build rapport.

You can even use your resume as a tool to strengthen your networking by seeking feedback on how to improve it further. Always say “thank you” as creating a genuine and caring relationship is the pillar towards strengthening your network connections.

3. Apply to companies showing potential growth despite Covid-19

This is one of the best times to research and apply to companies that have adapted well to the Covid-19 outbreak and are also uniquely positioned to provide benefits to those who work from home.

Most tech companies are equipped to transition their office roles to remote work to keep their businesses operating as usual.

Companies dealing in healthcare and manufacturing are on the lookout for new hires as the demand for resources continues to rise due to Covid-19.

4. Give your resume and online profile a facelift

With so many jobs and businesses disrupted during the lockdown period, searching for jobs will be challenging, more so now that the conditional movement control order is in force.

Take this opportunity to revamp your resume and online profiles to highlight your current career accomplishments, skills and work experience.

When it comes to looking for remote jobs, read all job descriptions thoroughly to ensure your specific skills match the work.

5. Online learning

Besides utilising your time for job searches, enrol in online courses to expand your skills. It’s essential to take this opportunity to bolster your qualifications. Check out Coursera’s course collections during Covid-19.

6. Pick up gig jobs for temporary income

You should consider picking up gig work or freelance jobs if you need funds to weather the uncertain months ahead. If this is your first attempt to partake in freelance work, look up your transferable skills and determine which jobs you can tap into.

7. Be patient with the job search process

Your search for a job will take significantly longer during these times as companies are working on making important changes to adapt to the current setting.

At the same time, the least you can do is keep track of your skills and capabilities. Just maintaining a simple record will help put things in check.
