Government committed to raise minimum wage to RM1,500 : Kulasegaran

PUTRAJAYA: Pakatan Harapan government is committed to fulfilling the agenda to raise the minimum wage to RM1,500 a month within the first term or five years of its administration, according to Human Resources Minister M. Kulasegaran.

He said Pakatan Harapan had so far fulfilled one of its 100-day pledges to implement a standardised minimum wage throughout the nation, with a decided rate of RM1,050 effective January 1 next year.

The minister said the decision to only increase the minimum wage by RM50 for workers in the peninsula was indeed a painful decision and was not meant to belittle the contribution of workers, especially the B40 group.

"This is not the end of the journey of minimum wages for Malaysia.

"We have been in power only for the past four months and we are determined to achieve the promises made in our manifesto including the minimum wages agenda by the end of our term.

"Please give the government some time to sort things out. Minimum wages agenda is certainly an enigma for the nation," he said in a statement today.

At present, the minimum wage in Peninsular Malaysia is RM1,000 while in East Malaysia, it is set at RM920. — Bernama
