KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Najib Razak today justified the government’s decision to invest in mega-projects as it helped address unemployment issues in the country.
“When we decided to construct the MRT, the Pan-Borneo highway, the Pengerang development and the Iskandar development projects, it was also to provide job opportunities,” he said during the Skim Latihan 1Malaysia (SL1M) special dialogue session.
Speaking to graduates in the government’s graduate employment programme, Najib cited his planned visit to an MRT project site and said, “There are hundreds of young engineers who have been given an engineering job in the MRT project.
“This shows that the MRT project launched by the government not only addressed public transportation problems, but also provided jobs and opportunities for our graduates,” he said.
Meanwhile, Najib also agreed that public universities should be held to a Key Performance Index (KPI) evaluation, as it helped increase the marketability of a graduate.
“If there is an employability KPI, then future budget allocations would increase. That is the deal under the higher education blueprint,” he said.
The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of creating a curriculum that was demand-driven, not faculty-driven.
“We should not be looking inwards, but must base (our university curriculum) on what the market and nation needs. This is the thrust of the national higher education blueprint,” he said.
