Tips For Career Progression

SUCCESS does not come easily and those who progress well in their career do not rely merely on good luck. In fact, a lot of hard work, good practices and habits are required.

• Accumulate experience

When you land a job that is less desirable, you should not give up easily and just quit. You should stay put in the company and gain knowledge and experience from the job.

After a few years, when you have built up experience and knowledge, you will be ready to move on to the next venture.

• Build up a social network

Build your social network by attending functions, friends’ gatherings and parties, and meetings with those in the same industry.

This is how you expand your social network. You will be able to find many opportunities and increase your knowledge by socialising with others.

• The right tolerance level

Some individuals have a very high tolerance level and will endure so much that it is too late for them to escape as they would have become too weak or exhausted. In the end, they are trapped and not able to find a better way out.

Then there are those who can hardly tolerate anything. They jump and scream at trivial obstacles. These individuals will not be able to withstand pressure and will easily shy away when faced with hardship.

Hence, it is important for you to be sensitive to the surroundings and have the right level of tolerance. When things are unbearable and it is time to go, you should have determination and be decisive to make the move or stop the injustice or nonsense.

• Guard your mouth

It is harder to control the mouth compared to the heart for at times your mouth may utter things that have not been filtered by the mind or examined by the heart.

Hence, if you are not careful, you may end up saying things that you will regret later or something that you may have to pay a high price for.

• Overcome the storm

When faced with trials or hardship, there’s always the temptation to give up. Many successful people realise that when they are able to pull through the hard times and persevere, they are thankful that they did not give up when the going got tough.

Hence, when times are bad, do not give up easily but hold on tight. You will see the rainbow after the storm.

• Humility

You should always be humble at all times when dealing with others. Whether you are a subordinate or a superior, always be kind and helpful towards others.

A subordinate should respect and obey the instructions of their superior at all times. If you disagree with your superior’s idea, humbly ask for a clarification and voice your concerns.

On the other hand, the superior should also respect subordinates and take care of their benefits. Superiors should not load overly heavy burdens on subordinates but should shoulder the responsibilities of a leader.

• Knowing when to let go

Successful individuals know that in certain times, letting go is the best choice. Sometimes when faced with the option to hold on to what you have or to give up entirely, you will find it very hard to loosen your grip and let go of whatever you have in hand.

Yet at times, only by letting go will your hands be free to embrace and take in something better and greater.

Hence, whenever faced with the choice of letting go or holding on, you need to have the courage to let go to welcome better opportunities.

The above are only some of the good practices of successful individuals. To progress well in you career, there is one thing that you must keep in mind constantly — respect for others and yourself. If you are able to practise this in whatever you do, you will find that success is always on your side.
