How to Deal With a Boss Showing Favoritism

What happens when you see someone at work getting special treatment over and above the rest of you? When the boss seems to make a big deal of everything good this colleague does and systematically ignores any faults? If this is happening in your workplace, it is important to deal with it early on before others become demoralized and disinterested.

Steps :

1. Analyze the situation. Look at the situations when this person seems to have been favored over others - what were the reasons in your estimation? Were other employees accorded the same congratulatory or supportive reactions in similar situations or not? What are the facts that make you view the boss' interaction with this colleague as displaying favoritism?

2. Talk to your other colleagues. Get their perspective on whether your sense of the situation is accurate or not. Ask them for examples that they have witnessed.Don't be negative about the colleague in question, however, or the boss either - just ask for facts and put the situation clearly and without judgment.

3. If your concerns are founded after following these two steps, it is time to face the boss in a private meeting. Remember to say how you have perceived the situation and give concrete examples of the situations where you felt that the favored employee was given special treatment over everyone else. If you can, take along another colleague who is willing to provide their perception and more facts and this indicates to your boss that it is a serious issue that has been noticed by all of the team.

4. Seek change. The discussion with your boss should lead to positive changes. Have you considered things the boss can do better before you enter this private meeting? You should do, because likely your boss will ask what you would like changed. Make the entire discussion a positive one that is only concerned with the way forward, not seeking apologies for the past.

5. See human resources if your boss doesn't make changes. If the favoritism continues, get human resources involved. Again, provide them with the concrete facts and a round-up of the discussion with your boss so that they can take it from there.
