Career myths debunked
1 YOUR MAJOR IN COLLEGE WILL DETERMINE YOUR CAREER
The fact of the matter is, many people choose to follow a career that has nothing to do with their degrees. Of course you cannot be a doctor if you haven’t studied medicine, or a lawyer if you haven’t studied law, or an engineer if you haven’t studied engineering.
However, you can easily be a lawyer or engineer that decides to pursue a career in business consulting or insurance instead. Many choose to follow something different after graduation, and it is perfectly fine if skills are transferable in some way to a new field.
2 IF YOU CAN’T GET A JOB, START YOUR OWN BUSINESS
Starting your own business is not as easy as it may seem. It requires a lot of commitment, and can spell high amounts of stress and financial strain especially at the outset.
This is not for everyone, and requires commitment and sacrifice. Don’t rush into something that may cost you heavily in terms of resources, financial and emotional commitment. Not being comfortable working for someone else is not a good enough reason on its own to start your own business.
A JOB THAT MAKES YOUR FRIEND OR COUSIN HAPPY WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY AS WELL
Just because you know people in a specific field and that they are happy working there, does not necessarily mean that this will be a good fit for you too.
Take the time to research a job well before taking the word of someone else from merely their personal experience. Compare the job with your values and interests to see if it will be a good fit for you.
3 YOU CAN’T MAKE A LIVING FROM YOUR HOBBY
Even though this is not always applicable, it is possible to make a living out of your hobby. It makes sense to do something you are passionate about; just make sure you think it through well and see how you can sustain a long-term career from it.
4 CHOOSING A CAREER IS SIMPLE
Choosing a career is one of the core decisions that will shape your life. It is as important as a marriage, or the decision to have children.
Even though you can change your career at some point, it will shape your life. You spend a lot of time on your career, and it isn’t always a clear path. So give yourself some slack, and take the time to make sure that you make the right choices.
