Employers can act against employees who buys fake MCs: Subramaniam

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam today reiterated that employers can take action against employees who buy fake medical certificates (MCs).

He said the offenders could be subjected to their company’s disciplinary board and actions would be based on the board’s recommendation.

“Falsification is a criminal issue. The police should take serious actions against the perpetrators.

“The Health Ministry is continuously upgrading the systems involved in printing, storage and issuance of MCs to ensure irresponsible people do not misuse it,” he said.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) president Dr Ravindran Naidu said that counterfeit MCs were usually produced by clinics.

“Employers should check with the clinic if they have any doubts about the MC. However, employers should also be understanding and accept legitimate MCs issued by doctors.

He said forcing people who are unwell to work would be really inconsiderate.

“In the case of infectious diseases is also counterproductive, as other staff will also fall sick. Anyhow, the association does not condone fake MCs,” he said.

Both parties were commenting on a recent case in Melaka where two men were nabbed for making, printing and selling fake MCs.
