Union : 3,000 MAS Workers Still Jobless

The Malaysia Airlines Employees Union (MASEU) says the Corporate Development Centre which was set up to retrain and find new jobs for retrenched MAS workers is a total failure.

The union, which is now virtually defunct since the national airline was incorporated as a new company, said of an estimated 3,000 MAS workers who were officially retrenched as of September 1, not even one have found a new job.

The CDC was set up by MAS shareholder Khazanah Nasional BHd to retrain and match workers who did not opt to join the new company, Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB), as part of the national airlines massive reorganisation plan.

Maseu secretary general Abdul Malek Ariff said these jobless ex-MAS workers are in difficult position to cope with their daily lives and are burdened with mounting expenses.

"Khazanah said the CDC will provide job placement to ex-MAS workers but until today not even one worker got a job placement. This shows the CDC idea has failed," Malek said.

CDC CEO Shahryn Azmi said the centre's re-skilling programmes are not short courses but will be able to place former MAS workers when they complete any of its programmes that include close to 450 courses.

Shahryn said one main reason for delay in job placement is due to companies that need more time to hire new staff.

The CDC is also holding another career event tomorrow at its offices in Kelana Jaya, Selangor with several companies including Perodua, Prasarana and PayPal present who are looking for employees.

Several government companies will also be present to provide free advice and consultation on financial planning and other useful knowledge.
"We have held four career and employer events since June with more than 70 companies that have engaged CDC to date, with over 3,000 job and career opportunities," he said,

He said CDC will continuously explore all avenues to get jobs for ex-MAS workers and that those who signed up for its programmes receive allowance under a budget allocated by Khazanah.

Meanwhile, the Maseu is also helping out retrenched workers with its own programme. In May the union announced a plan to set up a cooperative to generate income and create jobs for retrenched MAS employees.

The setup, according to its president, Alias Aziz, will serve as a channel to help unions members to look for new employment opportunities, such as becoming taxi drivers or work in other sectors.

He said Maseu had also received various job offers from government departments and agencies, as well as private sectors for exiting MAS employees.

The CDC was set up as part of the 12-point MAS recovery plan, offering a range of free outplacement and training services, including talent profiling, career counselling, basic and detailed training, job seeking skills, entrepreneurship, retirement planning and placement.

The CDC’s main training facility is located at the MAS Academy in Kelana Jaya in Petaling Jaya. CDC’s services are also available at Penang Skills Development Centre, Sarawak Skills Development Centre in Kuching, Sabah Skills Development Centre in Kota Kinabalu, Johor Skills Development Centre, Pahang Skills Development Centre in Kuantan.
